APARTMENT IN VIA ROSSELLI
San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy, 2001
The property is a maisonette apartment organized on the first and second floors of a purpose-built block on the outskirts of the town. The clients, a young couple with no children, had bought the property off-plan with a government-backed mortgage scheme and with the intention of changing the layout and the finishes.
The low budget intervention pivots around a new open treads staircase, envisioned as the centrepiece of the open plan arrangement on the lower ground floor: the design makes use of off-the-shelves components - standard sized steel channel stringers are combined with stainless steel tension wires, as used in nautical applications - to achieve a light and transparent ascent to the level of the sleeping quarter.
A lime green fin-like element partly separates the Kitchen Area from the Living Room with a slot shaped aperture to encourage diagonal views.
Traditional parquet floor blocks are laid in a diagonal pattern in contrast to the orthogonal arrangement of the maisonette
