AN EDWARDIAN TERRACE IN BRIXTON

FPA was commissioned to remodel and extend the ground-floor living areas and devise a design strategy that would bridge the clients’ differing tastes—one drawn to a traditional aesthetic, the other favouring a more contemporary approach. The challenge lay in harmonising these contrasting preferences while respecting the architectural heritage of the property.

Our design approach embraced a style that moved away from rigid modernism, focusing instead on controlled ornamentation and a refined beauty, echoing the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. This concept infused the project with a sense of craftsmanship and artistry, where design is not only functional but also emotionally resonant.

The rear extension, a wrap-around addition, creates a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area. This new space seamlessly connects to the front of the house through slim-framed, double-pivoting doors that align with oversized French doors leading to the garden. The French doors are flanked by vertical masonry ribs, built from reclaimed London stock bricks salvaged during the partial demolition of the old outrigger, reinforcing the home’s character.

Upon entering, one is welcomed by a dramatically enlarged foyer, setting the tone for the rest of the interiors. Here, complex textures are skillfully paired with intricate detailing, offering a modern interpretation of traditional crafts and patterns. The ombré flooring serves as a contemporary and abstract take on the classic tiled hallways of Edwardian homes, infusing the space with both nostalgia and innovation.
